This is a short policy because the site collects very little.
The calculator and the comparison tool
Both run entirely in your browser. Your electricity tariff, your mileage, the cars you compare and your choice of units are computed on your own device and stored in your browser’s local storage so you do not have to re-enter them. None of it is transmitted to this site or to anyone else. Clearing your browser data removes it completely.
Server logs
Our web server keeps standard access logs — IP address, page requested, timestamp, browser user agent — for security and troubleshooting. These are retained for a limited period and are not used to build a profile of you.
Cookies
The site sets no tracking cookies for ordinary visitors. WordPress sets cookies only for logged-in administrators. Local storage is used for your unit preference, colour scheme and calculator inputs, which is not a cookie and never leaves your device.
Third parties
The site loads no third-party analytics and no external fonts. Fonts are served from our own server precisely so that reading a page does not tell a font provider you were here. There are two third parties, and both are named below rather than left for you to find in the network tab.
Advertising
This site carries advertising from Google AdSense, which is how it pays for itself. Article pages carry at most one advertisement, always below the article body and always labelled “Advertisement”. The comparison tool and the running-cost calculator carry none at all — an advertisement next to a control you are actively clicking produces accidental clicks, and we would rather forgo the revenue than design for that.
What this means for your data: Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies and similar identifiers to serve advertisements. It may use them to show ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. Google receives your IP address, the page you are on, your browser user agent, and the identifiers it has previously set. We do not receive any of that, and we pass Google nothing about you ourselves — the request goes from your browser directly to Google’s servers.
You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, and out of personalised advertising from participating vendors at aboutads.info/choices. Opting out does not remove advertising; it removes the personalisation. In the EU and UK, Google presents its own consent notice before setting advertising cookies, and your choice there is honoured independently of anything on this page. Google’s own description of what it collects is in the Google privacy and terms.
Advertising has no influence on what this site says about any car. Nothing on this site is a paid placement, no manufacturer has reviewed any page before publication, and the sources under every figure are there so you can check the numbers rather than take our word for them.
Content delivery network
One exception, and we would rather name it than let you find it in the network tab: our content delivery network, Cloudflare, currently injects its own small analytics script (static.cloudflareinsights.com) into pages at the edge. It measures page performance and does not use cookies or build a cross-site profile, but it is a third-party request and this page would be wrong to claim otherwise. We are switching it off; when that is done, this paragraph will say so. Cloudflare also sees ordinary request metadata in the course of serving pages, which is unavoidable for any site behind a CDN.
This page previously said that advertising, if it were ever introduced, would be described here before it went live. That is what the section above now describes, and it was written and published in the same change that switched the advertising on.
Your rights
If you are in the EU, UK or a jurisdiction with comparable law, you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you and to have it deleted. In practice we hold almost none. Requests go through the contact page.
