Who writes this site, how a figure gets on to a page, and what we will not publish.
Who we are
EV Model Compare is an independent reference for electric-car data. It is written and maintained by a small editorial desk, credited on every page as the EV Model Compare editors. We are not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any vehicle manufacturer, charging network, energy supplier or dealer group. No manufacturer has been given sight of a page before publication, and none has any right of review.
We publish under a desk byline rather than personal names because the work is collective and, more importantly, because what should carry your trust here is the sourcing, not a signature. Every number on this site can be traced to a named public dataset and the date we read it. If a figure cannot survive that test, it does not go up.
Where the numbers come from
We prefer primary, publicly checkable sources, in this order:
- Government and regulator datasets: the US Environmental Protection Agency for range and energy use, the Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center for charging infrastructure, the Energy Information Administration and Eurostat for electricity prices, the European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin for fuel prices, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for safety ratings, recalls and complaints.
- Manufacturer technical documentation, where a specification exists nowhere else.
- Independent measured databases, cited as such, for real-world consumption figures that no regulator publishes.
Every figure carries its source and the date that source was read. Where two credible sources disagree, we say so on the page rather than quietly picking one. Where a value is modelled rather than measured, it is labelled as an estimate and the formula is published on the methodology page.
What we will not do
- We do not publish press-release numbers unchecked. A peak charging figure quoted in a launch announcement is a claim, not a measurement, and we treat it as one.
- We do not sell placement in a ranking. No car has appeared in a best-of list, or moved up one, because of a commercial relationship. The ordering of every ranked list is produced from the published data by a stated rule, and the rule is printed on the page.
- We do not accept paid links, sponsored posts or link exchanges. If we link out, it is because the destination is the source of a figure or is genuinely useful to the reader.
- We do not use scraped review text or invented owner quotes. Where we have no data, the page says we have no data.
- We do not give financial advice. Running-cost arithmetic is arithmetic; what you should buy is your decision.
Advertising
The site carries display advertising through Google AdSense, and that is how it pays for itself. Ad units are labelled as advertisements and sit outside the editorial content. Advertisers have no input into what we publish, no advance sight of it, and no ability to have a page changed or removed. The comparison tool and the running-cost calculator deliberately carry no advertising at all, because they are dense with controls and an accidental click there would serve nobody.
Keeping pages current
Data pages carry a visible date. Price, tariff and infrastructure figures move, and a page that was right in March can be wrong by September, so each page shows when it was last reviewed rather than only when it first went up. Refreshing a figure to a newer edition of the same source is a routine update. Discovering that a figure was wrong is a correction, and corrections are handled under a separate published policy.
Corrections
If you find an error, we want to know, and we would rather hear about it from you than leave it up. The full process, including what counts as an error and what we do about it, is on the corrections page. Write to us at [email protected] and point at the figure and the source you think is right. Confirmed factual errors are fixed as soon as they are confirmed, and a correction that changes a conclusion is noted on the page rather than silently applied.
