Running costs

What an electric car actually costs to run, worked out from electricity prices and measured consumption rather than from manufacturer claims. Every cost figure names the electricity price it assumes and the mileage it is spread over, and both are yours to change in the running-cost calculator. Consumption comes from the EPA where a US rating exists, measured at the wall so charging losses are already inside the number. The 6 pieces in this section: EV charging cost in Europe: every country, and where it beats petrol, EV charging cost by state: $44 a month in Nevada, $177 in Hawaii, What it costs to charge an electric car per month: 15 cars at US rates, What an EV battery replacement really costs in 2026, EV vs petrol: what it really costs to run one in 2026 and Tesla battery replacement cost and warranty: what Tesla actually publishes (2026).

Where to start: for a first estimate, the by-state and per-month pieces price charging at US rates, and the Europe piece does the same country by country. The two battery pieces cover a cost that an electricity bill never shows. The total-cost analysis then sets both against a petrol car over the same distance with every assumption listed, and the methodology page gives the formulas if you want to check the arithmetic yourself.
